Take Back the Woods: Battling Invasive Species
Description
Celebrate Earth Day by helping to “weed out” invasive plants at Jennings Environmental Education Center on Saturday, April 17! Invasive plants like multiflora rose, barberry, or garlic mustard take over native plant habitat, which can also harm a variety of wildlife and pollinators, and even harbor pests, like ticks. During this volunteer event, individuals or groups of up to 12 volunteers can sign up for their own one hour time slot between the hours of 9 and 2 to take back the woods from the invasives! Each volunteer/group will receive: a virtual introduction to invasive plants and the projects to watch in advance or in the parkall the tools/materials and directions needed to help the park remove these destructive plants during you one-hour time slotan invasive species cookbook as a reward for their effortsParticipants must be age 12 or older and be prepared to work outdoors, rain or shine. Pre-registration for the event is required no later than April 15thby clicking the registration button or calling 724-794-6011. Please register one responsible adult, and then add all of the participant names and the ages of participants under 18 in the Additional Info section. (For families with children younger than 12, please register instead for our Family Science Outside: Invasives program on Aril 18 or 20-22). The following COVID safety protocols will be in place: Social distancing: Participants do not need to come inside for access to the introduction or materials. Social distancing between staff and participants will be practiced. Masks: Any participant choosing to come inside the park office or interacting with staff must wear a mask. Jennings staff wear masks at all time.Participants should bring their own water bottles and water, hand sanitizer, and work gloves if possible. All tools and sanitizing wipes will be provided. Restrooms with running water for handwashing will be open.We ask participants to stay home if they have been diagnosed with COVID-19, are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, or have been in contact with anyone who has been diagnosed or is experiencing symptoms.
